Abacha Era Better Than Obasanjo's Govt - Useni
From Donald Andoor in Abuja, 04.27.2006 Factional Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples' Party (ANPP), Lt. Gen. Jerry Useni (rtd.) yesterday defended the regime of the late Gen. Sani Abach on allegations of human rights abuses and the unwillingness to hand over and argued that the regime was better than the present one.
Useni, responding to a question during a round table with newsmen in Abuja on why he is opposed to a third term project contrary to the support he gave the late dictator to elongate his stay in office, recalled how some people were putting pressure on the late Abacha to continue "but I personally advised him (Abacha) not to be deceived...
"But in spite of what the people are saying, we have seen the difference...you can see what is happening today against what happened during Abacha days; today, the EFCC is all over the place pursuing some people.
The Former Minister of Federal capital Territory (FCT) and close confidant of the late Abacha rhetorically queried, "if people said Abacha was killing people, what happened to Dr. Marshal Harry, Dokubo, the Chief law officer of Nigeria, Bola Ige?"
Defending Abacha not to have told anybody he would continue in office, Useni regretted all the things people are saying against Abacha that he was killing people and doing all sorts of things.
On the demolition exercise going on in Abuja in order to correct the master plan, he said there was need to resettle people before demolishing their houses to show that the government cares for its citizens.
"There is no sincerity in all the noise about the demolition" he said adding, "if we want to correct the master plan in its strict planning...the Presidential complex, the house of the Vice-President, the Secretariat will all have to be demolished...so we have to be sincere.
